How to Pursue a Hail Damage Claim

At StormClaim.com, our public adjusters know that hail damage can lead to extensive harm throughout a homeowner’s property.  If the damage is not identified right away, it can lead to roof leaks, then potential water damage inside the home next time it rains.

Although hailstorms are not incredibly common, they do occur. And when they do, your property — from your home, roof, siding, and windows — is vulnerable to serious damage that could be disputed by your insurance company if you do not have proof of how it occurred.

Here are a few tips to pursue a successful hail damage claim.

Be Sure to Act Immediately During and After the Hailstorm

If you are in your home when the hailstorm is taking place, record the storm in real time. Use your cellphone or another recording device to record the size and amount of hail that is falling from a window or other open area. Once the storm stops, immediately record how much has fallen on the property before it melts. Use a ruler or measuring tape for reference, so the full impact of the storm is visually understood.

Next, look for obvious signs of damage to your roof, siding, windows, garage, shed, and HVAC unit, and take photos of all the property damage you can see.

Even if you are comfortable getting on your roof to look for damage, reach out to a local roof repair and replacement contractor for a free estimate.

Be Proactive: Hail Damage Can Lead to Roof Leaks

Roof leaks are hard to identify until it rains again. Unfortunately, by then, it is too late to mitigate the water damage that follows.

If the roofing contractor believes there is a potential leak — or identifies a hole in the roof — be sure to place a tarp over the affected area(s) to keep further damage from occurring.

Get a Roof Repair/Replacement Estimate from a Professional Contractor

During the roof inspection, a roofing contractor will estimate the cost of the repairs, and determine if there is enough damage to warrant a total roof replacement.

The insurance company will also send their claims adjuster to assess the damage, which is typically where the difference in opinion begins.

If the roofing contractor gives you an estimate of $15,000, and the insurance company lists the damage at $5,000, you will need a second opinion to appeal the claim to recover the settlement that you deserve.
